As per this answer on AskUbuntu http://askubuntu.com/a/6643, the uninput module isn’t automatically loaded in Ubuntu 10.04 to manually load it: sudo modprobe uinput to automatically load it on startup: echo 'uinput' | sudo tee -a /etc/modules Also note that /dev/uinput requires sudo access so to run NetworkTablet you need to sudo ./networktablet
